Regular wellness visits are an integral part of women’s health care. Current guidelines from the American Cancer Society recommend that all women aged 21 and over have regular well woman exams to screen for breast cancer and cervical cancer. Dr. Burke also offers screening tests for Sexually Transmitted Illnesses (STIs) and counseling on contraception and family planning. She is also able to order screening and diagnostic mammography and ultrasounds.

Natural Treatments for HPV and Abnormal PAPs

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI/STD) in the United States; in fact most people will be exposed to HPV at some point in their lifetime. The majority of HPV infections occur without any symptoms and then resolve on their own within a period of two years. However, persistent infection with some strains of HPV can cause cancer or genital warts. The high risk-strains of HPV that are associated with cancers are usually asymptomatic, which is why cervical cancer screening with a PAP smear is so important.

For women who have had an abnormal PAP there are many treatment options available depending on the severity of the abnormalities seen on the cervix. Dr. Burke is dedicated to supporting women with abnormal PAPs and she will work with you and your Gynecologist to develop a comprehensive treatment plan including natural immune-support therapies to help your body fight the HPV infection and reduce your risk of developing cervical cancer.

Functional Hormone Balancing and Bioidentical Hormone Therapy

womens_hormone_healthFeeling like you lost your spark? It could be your hormones.

Sex steroid hormones are the chemical messengers that orchestrate our reproductive capacities but they also have a profound effect on our moods and overall well-being. The main sex steroid hormones in both men and women are Estrogens, Progesterone, and Testosterone. When these hormones are out of balance a variety of unpleasant symptoms may arise including: fatigue; depression; anxiety; weight gain; low libido; PMS; irregular, heavy, or painful periods; and menopausal symptoms like hot flashes, irritability, and vaginal dryness. Low levels of estrogens in women is also a risk factor for bone loss and heart disease, which is why the likelihood of having these health conditions increases after menopause.

Luckily, there are many natural treatments to promote healthy hormone balance. Dr. Burke takes a functional medicine approach to hormone balance, using a combination of nutrition, vitamins and nutrient supplements, and herbal medicines to help restore optimal hormone levels so you can get back to feeling your best.

In some cases, Dr. Burke prescribes bioidentical hormone treatments for severe menopausal symptoms, to prevent osteoporosis, or as appropriate to treat other health conditions. Bioidentical hormone replacement uses Estrogens, Progesterone, and Testosterone alone or in combination to enhance your body’s own hormone levels. Bioidentical hormones are chemically identical to the hormones that your body normally makes on its own. All hormone therapies convey some risk, which should be carefully weighed against the potential health benefits of these medications. Although the research is so far limited, bioidentical hormones do appear to be safer than non-bioidentical hormones such as synthetic Progestins and Premarin (an estrogen made from the urine of pregnant horses).
