Classical Homeopathy and Naturopathic Medicine

As a naturopathic physician, Dr. Cori Burke is expertly trained in the use of homeopathy for treating both acute and chronic health conditions.
At the National University of Natural Medicine Dr. Burke studied under Will Taylor, MD and Durr Elmore, DC, ND. She also received advanced training in homeopathic medicine from Paul Herscu, ND and Amy Rothenberg, ND through the New England School of Homeopathy.
Dr. Burke is passionate about using constitutional homeopathy to treat the whole person and to optimize long-term health and well-being.
What is Homeopathy?
Homeopathy is a distinct system of natural medicine that is effectively used by millions of people world wide. Homeopathy utilizes dilute amounts of natural substances (plants, minerals, animal substances, etc.) to stimulate the body’s own capacity to heal itself.
Homeopathy was developed in 1796 by a German physician named Samuel Hahnemann. The central idea of homeopathy is called the Law of Similars, i.e. the idea that “like cures like.” The Law of Similars is based Dr. Hahnemman’s observation that a substance which can cause an illness or symptom may also, when given in extremely dilute doses, cure that same illness by stimulating the body’s vitality and encouraging homeostasis (i.e. balance).
Is Homeopathy Safe?
Homeopathic medicines are very safe. Because homeopathic remedies are so dilute they are naturally non-toxic and they do not interact with other medications. Homeopathic remedies work with the body to heal and they are gentle enough for use in people of all ages from infants to elders. Remedies are prepared according to the United States Pharmacopeia by homeopathic pharmacies that are regulated by the FDA. As with any form of medicine, it is recommended that you seek treatment from a practitioner well trained in homeopathic medicine, such as a naturopathic doctor (ND), osteopathic doctor (DO), chiropractor (DC), or a functional/integrative medical doctor (MD).
What Health Conditions Benefit from Homeopathy?
Do you have a variety of symptoms that seem unrelated? Have you suffered with a health condition for years but doctors repeatedly tell you that you are fine? Although homeopathy can benefit any acute or chronic disease, the place where it really shines is in conditions that defy diagnosis.
Homeopathy is also wonderful to treat common illnesses in children such as ear infections, chronic runny noses, croup, and colic. Children often respond very quickly to homeopathic medicines because of their naturally strong vitality.
What Can I Expect During a Homeopathic Consultation?
A homeopathic consultation is about getting to know you. During a consultation Dr. Burke will ask a series of questions to understand not only your physical symptoms, but also how your symptoms affect you personally and how they shape the way you relate to the world. This often requires an in-depth interview in order to fully understand the nature of the issue. Most people enjoy this process and the individualized care and focus it provides.
Homeopathic remedies are usually given as a liquid or small dissolving pellets. Sometimes the same remedy is taken every day (this is often the case in acute illnesses), but more commonly only a single dose of the remedy will be given and it might not be repeated again for several weeks, if at all. Single doses of a homeopathic remedy will continue to work over time to gently bring the body back into balance.
Once a homeopathic prescription is given, follow up visits usually happen six weeks later. At the follow up visit Dr. Burke will evaluate whether or not the remedy has successfully brought about improvements, if it needs to be repeated, or if a new prescription should be given.
